Your Black Friday and Cyber Monday promos may have been muted

Zig when everyone else zags for publicity respect

I’ve deleted hundreds of marketing emails this week without opening them.

You’ve heard me crow about this before. Pluck and present what’s different about your business or talent to generate publicity. You’ve got to be funkier, more mind-blowing, informative and entertaining so your marketing and publicity truly stand the f*** out (h/t Louis Grenier), especially if you have a niche product or service.

When it hit

It hit me like a coconut falling from a tree while I was promoting a NIL digital download on Cyber Monday. Mind you, I decided to join the fray last minute, but I wrote, designed and posted a promo on most of my social media channels.

A couple of hours after I set my Etsy Cyber Monday sale (yes, there are NIL downloads sold on Etsy), I went to my own inbox where I receive marketing emails. It was littered with “specials” from every business I’ve patronized in the last century. Some were resent every few hours. It happened for days.

When I deleted most without opening them, I realized two things: 1) I’m glad I only promoted the cyber discount on a few social channels, and 2) sending dozens of Cyber Monday or Black Friday promos may annoy customers more than entice them. Helpful Tip: If you send reminders, at least recombobulate the subject line, body copy and design to make customers want to open them.

There’s still time to get it right

Be so “WOW” that your marketing material stands out from the crowd. When it arrives in someone’s inbox the same day as a zillion other promotions, you risk getting lost or ignored. If today your goal is to earn sales before the holidays, there’s still time to create a promotion with pop.

So go for it! Get your zig on.

🎁 Just for SIDEbar readers 🎁

About that Cyber Monday deal (target: athletes, parents and school administrators). It’s a pared-down, one-week version of what a publicity client might get to jump-start their goals to get noticed – or better noticed.

People in the athlete NIL niche have asked for DIY material, so I’ll create more. Until then … a sweetener for YOU (feel free to share). Call it my Not-A-Calendar-Cyber-Day-Deal. The special is good through the weekend.

🤦🏻‍♀️ I screwed up last week. Thanks to ZW for letting me know I published the wrong link for the swag store. There’s still time to order there, too: 👕https://auntiegailgreetingspr.printify.me/products
