Quality questions lead to irresistible answers

Suzy Shuster and Amy Trask answer my question -- about questions

I recently set out to speak with some of the best in media to learn how they get great answers from people they interview. Asking a question that leads to a compelling, entertaining or informative answer that helps tell a story, is a craft. Few do it well.

This week, I asked What the Football (WTF) podcast hosts, Suzy Shuster and Amy Trask, what it takes to ask those kinds of questions. Shuster, an Emmy Award-winning reporter, and Trask, the first female CEO of an NFL team who spent nearly 30 years with the Oakland Raiders organization, chop it up with guests during the football season and beyond.

Whether you’re a journalist, publicity agent or simply work with people, knowing how to ask a great question is like adding an extension to a Swiss Army knife. It’s that valuable.

Thanks to Suzy and Amy for their time – and their producer for not editing out the fun stuff. (Apologies — this platform wouldn’t let me share the video, but I’ll post it on socials later.)

I really try to ask a question that leads them to a story or to explain something using personal experience. And I think that people love to talk about themselves.
